Cancer is a costly disease that imposes significant financial burdens on patients, families, and healthcare systems. The costs associated with cancer include direct medical expenses, such as diagnosis, treatment, and hospitalization, as well as indirect costs, such as lost productivity and reduced quality of life.

The cost of cancer care is increasing, driven by factors such as the rising incidence of cancer, the development of new and expensive treatments, and the aging of the population. As cancer care becomes more complex and expensive, it is critical to find ways to improve efficiency and affordability without compromising the quality of care while improving clinical outcomes.

Challenge to Kuwait’ Healthcare System

The rising incidence of cancer in Kuwait is putting a strain on the country's healthcare system, which is struggling to keep up with the growing demand for cancer care. Key challenges include limited resources, shortage of skilled healthcare professionals, and insufficient infrastructure for cancer screening, diagnosis, and treatment.

In addition, there is a need for greater public awareness of cancer prevention and early detection, as well as improved access to affordable and high-quality cancer care for all patients, regardless of their socioeconomic status. Addressing these challenges requires a coordinated and collaborative approach involving multiple stakeholders, including healthcare providers, policymakers, and the community.

Personalized Medicine & Patient Centric Care

Currently in the planning stages, LifeomicsTx is preparing to launch a personalized medicine service focussing on chemotherapy, diabetes, and dermatology.
A state-of-the-art prescription-based compounding pharmacy will make medications to order for each patient based on their physician’s order.  All medications will be compounded under pharmaceutical production standards including cGMP.

Drug Compounding

Recently, the FDA and other regulatory authorities have taken the position that all compounding facilities, whether they be outsourcing or prescription-based must now be registered and comply with cGMP practices.

Drug compounding is regarded as the process of combining, mixing, or altering ingredients to create a medication tailored to the needs of an individual patient. Compounding includes the combining of two or more drugs.

Compounding is a broad activity including:  reconstitution, admixing, dilution and prescription medicinal preparations. Compounding is often done in hospital pharmacies and specialized centers (e.g. cancer centers) that are adequately equipped and where staff are specially trained and that have established quality management programs.

Why do some patients need compounded drugs?

A drug may be compounded for a patient who cannot be treated with an approved medication, such as a patient who has an allergy to a certain dye and needs a medication to be made without it, or an elderly patient or a child who cannot swallow a tablet or capsule and needs a medicine in a liquid dosage form. Practitioners in hospitals, clinics, and other health care facilities sometimes provide compounded drugs to patients when an approved drug is not medically appropriate to treat them.

Therapeutic classes of medicines that can be compounded.

Electrolyte | Nutritional  | TPN (electrolyte + nutritional) | Irrigation | Osmotic diuretics | Plasma volume expanders | Urological irrigation | Hemodialysis | Peritoneal dialysis | Hemofiltration | Sterile water | Antibiotics | Steroids | Cytotoxic (chemotherapy)

How are compounded medications different from other medications?

Unlike brand or generic medications that are regularly made by pharmaceutical companies, compounded medications are not commercially available. This means that they are not made by a pharmaceutical company and therefore, don’t have a trade or brand name like the typical prescription filled at dispensary. They are made based on your doctor’s prescription.

In many cases, such preparations have a very short shelf life ranging from several hours to up to 60 days.  Therefore, ready-to-use drugs are not an option.

What form of medications can be compounded?

  • Creams/ointments

  • Liquids/solutions

  • Capsules

  • Troches (a lozenge which dissolves in the mouth).

  • Pessaries and suppositories

  • Injectables

Depending on the applications both sterile and non-sterile preparations can be compounded.
